Lesson of the Week
Ms. DePietro’s art lesson was a wonderful showcase of creativity, engagement, and student-centered learning. From the start of class, students entered a welcoming environment with clear routines and expectations that allowed everyone to jump right into the creative process. Throughout the lesson, students explored important artistic concepts such as form, composition, focal point, and negative space while actively applying those ideas to their own work. Thoughtful class discussions and guiding questions encouraged students to think deeply about their artistic choices and make meaningful connections between technique and design.
A standout feature of the lesson was the balance of teacher modeling and student independence. Using the document camera, Ms. DePietro demonstrated techniques step-by-step, including how to safely use a compass, create circles of different sizes, and paint using negative space. By providing directions both visually and verbally, she ensured all learners could confidently access the lesson and feel successful. Students then took ownership of their projects, independently managing materials, following procedures, and expressing creativity through their artwork.
The classroom atmosphere reflected a strong sense of support, encouragement, and confidence-building. Ms. DePietro worked closely with students when needed, helping them feel comfortable taking risks and trying new skills. One particularly meaningful moment involved encouraging a hesitant student to simply begin with a few practice circles, which quickly led to full participation and independent work. Experiences like this highlight the positive, inclusive culture she has created—one where students feel empowered, supported, and proud of their learning. Overall, the lesson was an inspiring example of engaging instruction, artistic exploration, and joyful learning in action.
